As meaningless as the Oscars, but for bike shops! Still, the little state that could gets 2 shops in the top 100! Congratulations and Yay! www.bicycleresearch.com/top100/index.htmlI've been to more than 10 of the shops on the list and my favorite pick of their list is the Ski Rack in Burlington, VT. Years ago I was on a racing road trip and went in there to bum a pump to get the tires up to "full turgidity" for a crit and the ensuing fiasco (my poor bike actually wound up locked into a repair stand with two flacid tires before I could take control) was enough to turn me off on that shop forever. Maybe they snuck in at number 99 or hired new high school kids. Probably they just sell lots of Trek Bikes.... gpickle

"Probably they just sell lots of Trek Bikes...." That's probably the case with most of the places listed on there. Here are the websites for the two places from Iowa on the list. Congrats to them (not that they'll probably ever read this). Personally, I'm not much a fan of the Big Box Bike superstores. Almost all of the ones I've ever been to have been utter s***. I'd much rather deal with a smaller, more specialized shop. Admittedly, I've never been to either of those, so maybe they're different. bikeworldiowa.com/ (West Des Moines - bicycle commuter capitol of, uh........suburban DM?) northtownebikes.com/ (Cedar Rapids) It's too bad most of the places on that list probably cater almost exclusively to the MTB and roadie crowd though. Oh well. Guess I'm just feeling salty today. Don't mind me.

consulting my newest issue of _bicycle retailer_...which has twenty-four of its sixty-two pages devoted to the top one hundred...i find that 'for those not familiar with the voting...more than a dozen of the top original equipment and accessory manufacturer sales reps cast votes for the top three retailers in their territories in three criteria: market share...community outreach...and store appearance...retailers also contribute to the list and may vote for the best retailer in their state and nationally...'
so market share is obviously the easiest criteria to dig through...since that's found on paper...and is probably what drives most of the decisions since it is the easiest...
