It's Tough Being a Fan of This Bike is a Pipe Bomb
Fan faces criminal charges after his bike causes a bomb scare at Ohio University.
Imagine the surprise of Ohio University graduate student Patrick K. Hanlin when he went to retrieve his bike from outside a campus snack shop and found the streets cordoned off because of a bomb scare. Imagine how much more surprised he was when he learned that the source of the bomb scare was his bike, which bore a sticker proclaiming, "This Bike is a Pipe Bomb." That's the name of a folk-punk band from Florida, for those of you not up on the whole underground punk scene.
An OU officer on patrol at 5:30 a.m. saw the bike and its offending sticker and immediately reported it as suspicious. Four buildings in the area were shut down, streets were blocked off, the bomb squad was called in (from Columbus, 65 miles away), and the bike was pounded with water from a fire hose before being torn apart by a "hydraulic device," according to the Columbus Dispatch. Only when Hanlin called in to claim ownership of the bike did campus authorities learn what the sticker really meant.
Despite Hanlin's cooperation, he is now being charged with "inducing panic." According to a local newspaper, the American Civil Liberties Union is now considering becoming involved in Hanlin's case.
This is not the first time This Bike is a Pipe Bomb's name has gotten their fans in trouble. In 2001, police in Austin, Texas detained a woman at a peace rally because she was sporting the same sticker. That woman was released and not charged when police determined the band actually existed.
