WOW! That is all I can say. I read the papers and listen to NPR and consider myself to be well informed as far as what the corporate advertisers want me to be informed of and so of course I knew in advance that Bush was going to say that America is "addicted to oil", and that we need to reduce our dependence on it but I must say I was FLOORED when cameras showed him and his posse of Secret Service folk rolling up to the big show on BICYCLES! And then, when he brought his inside with him and put it on the podium to give everyone a good look at it, I thought aloud, "What gives here?" I was skeptical. But as his speech wore on and he continued to extol the virtues of his "beautiful machine" as he called it and spoke at length of all the good it does for him and the world I began to believe that maybe this was real. Sure it was a Trek(Sucks) but at least it had lights on it plus rack and fenders, a real commuting machine! After he showed off the pictures of he and his family using bicycles to commute around the towns they live in and run errands and such I began to feel euphoric. Then, when he invited the members of the Supreme Court and Congress to, "Come on up here and take yerself's a gander at this here gear-a-majiggy", I awoke with a start.

It's amazing how we nonchalantly accept 40,000+ traffic fatalities per year and then go ballistic over roughly 3,000 deaths occurring from an exceptional act of terrorism, especially when that very traffic is the primary cause for our dependence on petroleum -- a substance considered by many to be one of the most significant factors in America's foreign (non)relations. Our own habits embracing one killer brought on the other killer. Incidentally, petroleum was also responsible directly for the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. Go by bicycle everyone!
