Sioux City owes the state Sioux City and Woodbury County both owe the Iowa Department of Transportation $178,000. That's after an agreement made in 1992 with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Fifteen years ago the city and the county wanted extra land next to the new Highway 75 Bypass to build a recreational trail. At the time the D.O.T paid extra money to purchase the land with an agreement that it would be paid back in the future.
The D.O.T has recently informed the city that they will soon be sending an invoice with a $356,000 price tag.
The city has no plans to build the rec trail. And such a trail would cost rougly two million dollars.
