It is common knowledge amongst my cycling buddies that every one of us has done more RAGBRAIs than anyone, including any of us. We "know stuff" and are not very shy about the sharing so here goes.
First thing is, don't register. You save a bundle right there!
So now that you have not registered if you MUST have one of the official jerseys that you are not going to get because you did not register just hit the official campground after the first night and locate your size on one of the many clothslines. Voila!
Beer is free on RAGBRAI, if you do not know this you are not even trying. Likewise breakfast at the pancake man is complementary.
A self contained ride to the start and across the state, too as well as home for good measure will save a thrifty rider a bundle and a planet a cloud of exhaust, too.
Good career choices are a must for the RAGBRAI enthusiast. Teachers and the unemployed need use no vacation time for the ride!
If you are personable and serious about doing RAGBRAI on a budget you might be able to borrow a dollar from everyone.
That should get you started with doing RAGBRAI on a budget!
Next time, how to MAKE MONEY ON RAGBRAI! Yes, it can be (and has been) done!

The title of the post is deliberately misleading. A few years ago, a radio station in Waterloo held a contest. The lucky contestant "won" a ride to the start town and $5. Their mission: complete RAGBRAI with $5 and no bike.
If you make friend easily and don't get worried about the little (or big) things, it could be done.
I would like to divide this post into some subtopics and explore some of the great ideas for RAGBRAI.
Registration is one good topic. Camping, bike choice, hotels, food, and beer all make excellent chapters.

Trade secrets? Easy! Use the George Costanza method--whatever the Ragister says you should do, do the opposite!

i've done more ragbrais than anyone else. i just did a couple in december. it's no biggie. $5? you're spending too much. my secret? hang out with the pickle. ask him about our last ride out together back in aught-oh-four. cheap? free. wake up in a field of horse nuts? hey, who hasn't done THAT before? and we did it for free! another surefire way to do ragby for less than $5? be bart.
