Schwinn, in one of its many incarnations, used to make some pretty glittery bikes and bags and such. They also used to sell water bottles and t-shirts and the like that said 2 wheels good, 4 wheels bad. I don't know who made up that little slogan and it does not much matter but I do remember Bambi's mom imparting some forest wisdom along those lines to Bambi. So I agree that four wheels are bad and I live my life accordingly.
I love riding my bike and I do it to get most places I want and need to go and while many folks hang their bike in the garage or shed for the "nasty" weather I keep on riding. I love it, actually. This morning I made it from my house to work with no dabs! Its a good challenge and I think riding in the snow and ice and crud and such helps out my bike handling skills much even if it does not do much for my drivetrains or steel frames. Ah well!
Now to my point. I love riding my bike but truth be typed that is not the only way to be car free. I have met lots of folks who are car free and do so by using public transport and walking. Pedestrians are great! I met one on the Appalachian Trail named Abner Serd and he wanted to move from Arizona to Maine so he shipped his possessions and started walking! There are, of course, other ways to get around and today being as we got loads of snow Cootie and I XC skid to our polling place to vote and I must say it was a wonderful feeling. I then opted for my clean ride to work and Cootie skid to and from her classes for good measure. So many great and clean and silent ways to get around. No windows to scrape, no gas to buy, Cars Suck!
