The Iowa City Bike Library will host a Roadside Breakfast for bicycle commuters on Friday, September 1, 2006. From 7:30am to 9:30am volunteers will serve free coffee, baked goods and fresh fruit to passing cyclists at the 408 E College St location. Anyone riding a bicycle to their morning destination can participate. Pedestrians are welcome, too. Tardy slips will be available to anyone who breakfasts too long!

Yay! Another free breakfast. Those GPickle® brand muffins last time were some tasty treats. I wish I didn't have to be to work at 7:30. Looks like I'll be in need of another one of those tardy slips. ;-)

GPickle is not corporate, no copyrights apply. Copyleft is the future!

Oooh, copyleft... I love this! In essence copyleft is simply the opposite of copyright. There is at least one restriction I know of, though. Anyone applying copyleft to their art, music, software, etc. (we'll just call it "work" for this definition) means they are allowing anyone to freely use the entire work itself or some part of it. The restriction is that the subsequent user of the original work must not file for any copyright license for the new work, leaving it a copyleft work just like the original. While it isn't recognized legally, the concept is used as a legal tool. The copyleft symbol is a mirror image of the copyright symbol: I know some people who make another condition to copyleft, that if you are going to use copylefted work, you should sight your source. Give credit where it's due. This seems fair to me. Copyright was originally intended to protect creators for a short amount of time, so they could develop their ideas. The laws have been contorted to protect not the development of ideas but the money-making machines that have let old ideas stagnate. Take for instance the 75-year copyright that was written specifically for that beast Disney. Mickey Mouse was about to become public domain, so good ol' Representative Sonny Bono of CA's 44th District saved the day for the rich guys (known as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act). So, copyright no longer protects the small-time creators, and that's where copyleft is a brilliant, shining star. There's a point where you just have to refuse to play that game. All my work is copylefted. I'm sorry this has nothing to do with bicycles.

It has EVERYTHING to do with bicycles.
We mock what we don't understand!

ps: the breakfast was not as well attended as others, but the scones were there and one person had tea (blt) so that was swell. We are happy to continue and are considering a full on pancake breakfast next month, but it probably won't happen so don't get too excited.

Bicycle commuters don't be discouraged by snow forecasts for this week! We're going to have our Roadside Breakfast this Friday, December 1st from 7:30am until 9:30am at the Iowa City Bike Library. We'll move it indoors, so feel free to come in and have some hot tea or coffee and a fresh baked muffin! Keep up on Bike Library news at... bikelibrary.blogspot.com/

Cheers to Del and Jen for manning the breakfast this morning. If any of you have never been to one of the breakfasts, you should head on over before 9:30, grab some treats and say hello. Thanks again to all of you who volunteer at the ICBL. You guys are the bee's knees.
