The League of American Bicyclists is encouraging greater use of bicycles for transportation and recreation with an awards campaign called Bicycle Friendly Communities. They outline steps to take in order to make your community more bicycle friendly. Involving city officials is the first and most crucial step. Once you apply for BFC status, the LAB will form a committee to evaluate your community's cyclability, and if you've done good you might win the bronze, silver, gold, or platinum in bicycle friendliness. Check out the winners: www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org/list.htmAs of the date of this post, no community holds the platinum, but it seems the LAB has a good idea here. Not so much with the awards but with the extensive amount of info on their website. They detail a 10-step action plan that is pretty straightforward and smart, but it all hinges on the participation and commitment of your mayor or other local executive. This is the action plan: www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org/symp_actionplan.htm(For Iowa City does anyone think Ernie Lehman would sign this thing? Regenia Bailey participated in the IBC's bike/bus/car race, so she might be a helpful hand. State Senator Joe Bolkcom, whose district includes IC, has also been very supportive of cyclists.) What do you you YOU think?
