after receiving this email via the bikeiowa list...i thought how a local iowa city seminar put on by the ibc would be awesome...
it wouldn't necessarily need to have food associated with it...so it wouldn't be a problem if it were to be held at the library for example...
what does anyone else think...?
-------------------------------------- Are you interested in attending a winter riding seminar? If you are please respond back to me at mikee@wctatel.net . It would more than likely be held in one of the local restaurants in Mason City that has a meeting room(Leaning towards Pizza Ranch). Russell Rayburn from Lakeside Cyclery has agreed to do the presentation. The date would be somewhere around the second or third week of November and would also depend on when I can get the room for the night. we will start with a meal(your cost) and then do the seminar which will probably last for approx. 1-1/2 hours(?). Topics will include Clothing(commercial, homemade), Tires(commercial, homemade), bicycle care, lighting, hazards of winter riding and whatever else Russell comes up with. I need an approx head count to set this up. If you would like to attend please let me know ASAP and I will get this set up. Mike Evans
PS: There will not be any cost for the Seminar itself, just the meal. Also leaning towards holding this on a Tuesday or Wed night.

There must be something in the air. Recently, some friends and I started a "bike to the restaurant" night, which we view as a way to get a big group together for a winter evening ride. We hope to keep it up well into next year.
That's probably a good rule to include for winter riding--give yourself a nice destination.

I would be interested in collaborating on a winter riding seminar. It is a wonderful time of year for me when the temps drop and the snow flies and all the bike racks are empty. It can be SUCH a pain finding a good parking space in this town!
Seriously, though, I would be interested in seeing something like this happen here. People need to understand that riding a bike in the cold and slush is great fun! They need to understand that it is possible to pass through an entire Iowa winter and NEVER scrape ice off a windsheild! They need somebody to tell them that you don't need a 2" knobby tire with screws in it to ride on ice! They need to know that riding in the winter produces body heat which keeps you warm and that sitting in a car waiting for it to warm up is stupid! In short, people need me and luckily I'm in stock.
Maybe it could be a joint production of the Broken Spoke and the IBC or sumthin? Maybe we are out of luck and it won't get cold this year? The ICPL is good. Snacks. We better offer snacks. Maybe Cootie could make a flyer.

People should also know that when there is a nice blanket of snow on the streets, everybody has to go slower, so in a way it levels the playing field. The ICPL is always a nice place to meet, but unfortunately, one group can only use a meeting room twice. The IBC has done that, so we'll have to sort out a new place. Personally, I'm rather fond of the Oasis Falafel Joint, and they have a large seating area in the back. Plus, they've been known to be cyclist-friendly. There are certainly other possibilities in town, but this is my vote.
And, yes, I can make a spanky-fine flyer.

That'd be awesome. I'd love to attend. It would be great to hear some of your technique for ice, gpickle -- i suppose it's mostly the same things that make you good on dry pavement, too, but I never said I was yet skilled there either. Or maybe it's not the same???

Mayhap we can get this cyclo-visionary to come and offer his winter riding tips?
Ninja Cycling School Cycling made safer through the skills of the Shadow Warriors
While cycling around the city I sometimes wonder what would happen if I got hit by a car. I like to imagine myself rolling elegantly across the bonnet, and landing on my feet to give the hapless driver a ferocious scowl of disdain, while a gaggle of attractive girls stare awe-struck at my casual dicing with death.
The reality would probably involve me hitting the car like a sack of potatoes and ending up lying on the floor in a pool of blood and bone-shards, whimpering. This is unacceptable. So I propose the founding of the Ninja Cycling Academy, where young people can learn to apply the skills of the ninja to cycle safety.
The curriculuum would be in three parts. The first part would be Tumbling Basics: the students would work on a mat, practicing aikido-style breakfalls, as well as cartwheels, somersaults, back-flips, prat-falls, etc.
In the second section, Applied Basics, the aspiring cycle-ninja would learn how to apply these skills to a cycle crash in highly controlled situations: for instance, they would practice driving their bike into the side of a car and hand-springing across the roof.
Once the disciple has thorougly mastered every aspect of Applied Basics, they are ready to move onto the most advanced section of the course: Freestyle Ninja Cycling. In this section, the student cycles through a mock-up of a street. Cars, driven by Ninja Cycling Masters, wait in ambush to collide with the acolyte, who will use the skills he or she has been taught to emerge unscathed. As this is just training, the student will wear helmet and padding, so as to avoid injury.
Finally our young learner has progressed to the stage where they need fear no car. They are ready to venture out onto the killing streets, secure in the knowledge that their awesome ninja cycling skills will allow them to transcend any emergency.

Can the IBC pony up some appearance fees?

gpickle said, Though we're all convinced that it was while writing this paragraph of this post that gpickle conceived the notion of I BRAG ("In short, people need [him] and luckily [he's] in stock" emphasis added), he's got some great points. This morning it was tremendous fun to go out blasting through sleet varying from one to six inches in depth -- it was so cool the way my tires sliced right through on down to the pavement during my errand-running this morning. Hardly more slippery than rain -- though I did use more caution when cornering. On my route back I paralleled my own tracks and saw right down to pavement in the bottom. Beats driving an automobile with those huge wide floater tires. The sleet doesn't stick to itself or much of anything else, either, so it's so fun and easy to ride through, unlike some types of sticky damp heavy snow.
