Anyone else notice the "Walk Your Bike" signs which appeared on the Bike/Ped Bridges crossing Hwy 6/Riverside Dr. at Iowa and at Burlington St.?

interesting...
i do always notice long skid marks right before the spiral going down...
i would imagine that can get pretty congested with people & bikes at times...
i've always wondered what the idea was for having people walk their bikes...is there enough bikers that have no regard for pedestrians out there...? walking a bike would take up more space by making someone wider than if they were on their bike...
that's too bad for the rest of us who can control our bikes in such situations...

I have spoke with one of the JCCOG planners. It has something to do with width and handrail height making it substandard for bicycles. This is only a warning sign and won't be enforced.
It sends a bad signal for bicycle accomodations. It would be much better to say "Bikes Slow Speed on Bridge" or something else.

I noticed these signs last week as I was making my way up the ramp. It didn't set in until I was making my way across the bridge and had three different people tell me to "walk" my bike.
Why even put them there if they will not be enforced? Legal reasons?
It will make walkers ticked off at cyclists as they seem to think we MUST walk our bikes, not an optional thing.

Has anyone heard about the expansion of Sand Rd out of IC? I heard they are planning to postpone finishing the expansion, so it won't be done this year. Anyone have any details?

Sand Road came in 10% over the engineer's projection. The project is delayed another year.

Do they figure materials (oil) or labor is going to be cheaper by next year? Well, the labor might be I suppose. Anyway, how much is 10%? Maybe the IBC could host a bake sale with proceeds to benefit Safer Cycling Southbound (SCS, of course) and we can get that thing done.

i can see how this forum isn't going to work so well the way mark set it up...
all of our eastern iowa issues will be shuffled amongst each other in one long scrolling list...
that being said...
i noticed something about those 'walk your bike' signs...
they are yellow...
according to the iowa dot...yellow represents 'general warning or caution'...
white signs are regulatory signs...these are the ones that you must do what they say...
so i'm thinking if anyone tells you to walk your bike...a calm reply of 'a yellow sign is only suggested...' might do the trick to prevent someone from thinking you're a big jerk...

Feel free to create seperate threads as needed for specific issues. I was just priming the discussion by adding areas.
