Last weekend my lady friend (in the parlance of our times) and I rode our brand spanking new and utterly comfortable recumbent tandem on down to a local Iowa City eatery called Lou Henri for some flap-jacks. We finished our meal and paid and then our attendant asked us if that was our bike out front. We said yes and she told us that we should have said something because if you ride a bike to Lou Henri you get 10% off your meal! We were flapjackgasted! I have heard that the Broken Spoke charges customers 10% more if they drive a car to the shop but as I never drive a car there so I can not confirm this. I am wondering if anyone out there knows of any other businesses that offer discounts to cyclists? We should start a list here of bike friendly businesses like Lou Henri and the Broken Spoke. I am going to start asking around and I urge everyone else to do the same!

Lou Henri's 10% discount goes way back--JC's Cafe, the predecessor to Lou Henri, offerred the discount, too (and featured an ordinary bike on its logo).
No discount, but Old Capitol Brew Works will let you park your bike inside.

Hmm. I know McDonalds and some other fast food places don't allow bicyclists to go through the drive-up -- not a money issue but a convenience one. I know, it's trashy food and disgusting but once in awhile I feel like a hot chocolate but not bad enough to lock the bike and go inside and get sweaty.
Also I talked to weiner posse today about downtown businesses -- apparently they will validate your parking ramp ticket for you. Well that's OK, I'm sure the city has something to do with that, it helps people shop downtown. And I'm glad the city provides lots of bicycle lock-ups too (despite lots of them are ill-designed). And we already save lots by riding. But in the interest of getting people on bikes more, it would nice to see discounts offered for bicyclists at more establishments. I guess it could be hard to verify that people had actually ridden their bicycles, though.
Well anyway, just random wanderings and wonderings.
