I just got home a few hours ago from a little camping trip with three super-great people. We left yesterday evening from Iowa City and had a pleasant ride to a friend's farm with loaded bikes (one with a BOB trailer). The farm is near Cedar Bluff, almost to Mechanicsville, and this is where we ate and pitched our tents. Our outing lasted less than 20 hours, and we rode around 50 miles total. So, if you need to get outta town, get a rack and a couple panniers... it's so easy to take an overnight trip that makes ya feel so good!

I've been wondering where all the baggers are this year. I guess I haven't been on the same roads at the same time. Seems like all I've encountered on the road is stick bikes.

DUDE! Okay, enough with the silly speech already. Cootie and I just got home from another marvelous tour of the highways and byways of Iowa. We left Saturday after fixing the 2 flats we had before we could even get out of our yard (honest) and rolled on down to Lake Darling State Park, where we spent a lovely evening in the presence of the American "GORVING.COM" crowd complete with their screaming children and giant trucks. We met a young chap named Dave who had just left Ames, IA 4 days ago on his bicycle with a Burley cargo trailer who was intent on exploring this country and any others that might get in his way for 2 years! Good luck to Dave! We left Lake Darling and rolled to Montezuma and Diamond Lake Park on Sunday, it was another great ride. A storm came through and was just beginning its sinister business of peppering our elbows and necks with enormous cold drops of water when we came upon and were able to take shelter in the Longhorn Saloon in Barnes City, IA. If you have always wanted to see a giant Long-horned Steers head staring down at you from above the bar while you drink your Bud Light out of a Mason Jar then this is the place you need to get to, and pronto-quick, bub-o! We had a nice time there and learned EXACTLY which way one of the local gentleman's "Hammer" was hanging while we drank. It was a quick shot into Montezuma then and we were delighted to find that the campground here was not so crammed as the last. We got ourselves a very secluded site and did what campers do. Today then, Monday, we rode back to Iowa City. It was a rough last day, we were surprised how worn out we were after a relaxed three day trip! We stopped downtown for a couple of iced coffee's and then came home. That is the story of our latest LIT, hope everyone else had a great weekend!

I salute you for braving a state park campground during "amateur weekend."
I can't remember why, but I recently saw a reference to Barnes City and realized that that is one Iowa town I've never been to (or even heard of). Thought that was strange, considering I've bike hither and yon for over a decade.
As far as I'm concerned, now we're getting into the good camping weather. I love taking my bike on a fall leaf tour, usually up north, but this year I'm thinking southeast.
Anyone have any favorite routes?

Hooray for bicycle tours! Cootie and I did another trip out to the farm by Mechanicsville on Saturday night and it was super swell, again. This time we did touring made easy by just hoping on our townies. Platform pedals and flip-flops are not our usual touring get up. The bikes are usually lighter, too. It was unseasonably hot but the night was much cooler out of town. We saw uncountable stars, got bit by bugs and watched folks wrassle in a real mud pit. There was some nudity. We ate heartily of sweet potato enchiladas and hummus and went to bed. It was great! In the morning a wild Turkey got to crowing or whatever it is that they do, and we were up. We watched some dogs play and then rode back home. We hope to get out again soon, we will keep you posted!
