Howdy!
Any of you who know me well are aware that I am more afraid of nature than I am of television which is why I avoid the stuff as much as possible. I ride most of my miles on good old clean and innocent pavement! All these years and I have yet to know the agony the bite of a mosquito may cause or the inflamation and swelling of the tongue, face and groin that I have heard can occur from a faceplant into a poisen ivy plant. So here I am, almost 53 years of age and I am considering buying a mountain bike and hitting the open dirt. Why, you ask! Well, since I'm writing this I get to ask the questions so shoosh up and mind your business. All I want to know is where it is that folks do their mountain bike riding in Iowa. If you have a favorite off road ride why not share it with an old man? I am just interested in locations to ride around the state and why you like riding there. I appreciate your help and value any advice you have about riding mountains where there is none.

I thought Iowa was supposed to be a friendly place where people were anxious to help out there neighbors. Apparantly I was wrong as I have heard squat from any of yous about where I can ride on the dirt in this state. Luckily the kid out at Sheel's Bikes Shop out at the mall had the dirt on the dirt for me. He sold me one of them Giant Faith Bikes with 8 inches of travel and good Shinamo components which he assured me is a perfect bike for comfort mountain biking in places like Utah and Colorado so that is where I am headed. Sunny Maob! I will give you a ride report when I get back in a week, that's what 34 years in the NAVY does for you, teaches you the value of SHARING knowledge. Keep yer helmets on!

Don't get to these forums as often as I should... Hope Moab was good and that you made time to visit Durango and Fruita while you were in that neck of the woods... I just returned from a week in Steamboat Springs... Wanted to encourage you to check out Sugar Bottom Recreation Area in your backyard, Decorah's bluffy singletrack and our Center Trail in Des Moines. Those are starting points for you; there are other trails worth your time in Iowa... If you need more info, check out: www.icorrmtb.comwww.centraliowatrails.orgOr call me! Hi all, I just wanted to reply that there is a lesser known trail that is just east of ic in several sections(hopefiully will go all the way through some day). You can park in the parking lot just across from the Hoover museum in West branch and ride 2 blocks north to catch the Hoover Nature Trail from WB to Oasis. Pretty flat, but very enjoyable just under 4 miles each way. Very nice trail. Also a section from just south of West Liberty to Conesville. That section goes through Nichols and is about 12miles each way. It may go past Conesville but I haven't ridden that far. Same old railroad bed as West Branch, also part of Hoover Nature Trail.
