Did you know that the Two Bee Racing team picks up 25% of Iowa City's residential garbage? This includes, but is not limited to three members of Atlas/Core, and one member of ICCC. The Two Bee city employees both ride or run to work all but 2-3 days out of the year, but sadly use up 24 gallons of diesel fuel a day once they get there. I'll leave it to you to decide who of the Atlas/Core team has the least, and most tidy garbage. One member might have to excuse himself from the competition due to construction waste it seems, you know who you are

Two Bee Racing team continues to impress! Great races, close to home (mine at least) for a great cause and refuse collection to boot! I hope it is not me with the construction waste.... I have not had any trash collected for the last few weeks so I think maybe I am the least? Probably not the tidiest..... No matter, I suppose, but thanks for the trivia skinny!

ps: 24 gallons a day! Yikes. That makes 100 gallons a day just for IC's residential garbage?
pps: what is the reason for the 2-3 days a year when riding or running to work does not happen?

Well, I've driven twice this year. The last time I didn't ride, the snow was pretty high and they hadn't plowed yet. My street hadn't been touched, and looking at the sidewalks I would be dragging my feet in it every pedal stroke. The other time, I just felt bad. Lucky for me, it's only about 2 miles as the car drives. I'll have to excuse myself from evaluating your trash pick up, I've only done it twice knowing it was you. On my route, Jim is the winner, one small can and pretty tidy to. I'll estimate residential Iowa City garbage at about 60 tons a day, that's four truck loads a day. This is a drop in the bucket compared to what goes out to the landfill, every hour they get more then that. It's amazing the amount of recyclable items people throw away, pizza boxes and cans alone. There are also many items that could be taken to goodwill or another charitable organization. Not to mention the single unused 23 cm gaterskin I found, come on people, where is the other one?

i remember reading a long time ago about the average american family of four produces ten or twelve pounds of trash a _day_...
i can't fathom that...as i only put out my one bag of trash every other week...
and yet trash gets collected here where i live _twice_ a week...

In my estimates, counting houses, comparing weights. I'm putting the number at around 20-30lbs a week for the average Iowa City home. All of the garbage men scratch there heads at this number, it always feels like much more. It seems we forget the one little bag we pick up, and remember all of the heaver cans of the day.
The lower income areas, and the rich are the heaviest areas with the least amount of recycling. The 50 lb limit and the limit of 2 cans are not followed well at all there. The middle class has the most recycling and the nicest garbage. This is a general statement, with exceptions home by home, but it is the trend I've noticed over the last 7-8 years.

most of my waste, and that of my dogs, gets flushed, or put into the mini-dumpster the city gives us here in capitol city. then, about every six weeks or so, i set mine out for collection. do the 2bs get mine, too?

I wouldn't be surprised if there were Bees in capital city that I didn't know about. I would be surprised if there were Bees in capital city that were garbage men, and collected your can. I'll bet $8 your garbage man doesn't ride a bike in two bee attire.

You know, that should read "New" Capital City, to avoid any confusion. I wouldn't be surprised if there were Bees in capital city that I didn't know about. I did not know, and was suprised to learn, that if you live in Iowa City you must have the City handle your trash collection. It is law, I was told. I spend about 10 dollars a month on trash collection. Livin la vida Pickle does not produce much trash as long as the house is not being remodled and I would like to have my HUGE trash container picked up less than weekly but this is not an option. HOW CAN THIS BE?!?!?? I am discussing trash collection on the IBC!?!??!?!?!? Gpickledrunk had more to do with bicycles than this, right? Not really, they all relate to the lifestyle. I want to ride my BI-cycle where I need to go and have my trash picked up BI-weekly and use the BI-nary computer language to rant about it.
BI!

do they come and knock on your door if you don't have your trashcan outside when they're supposed to be picking it up...?
or are you just wanting to pay like five dollars a month to have it picked up bi-weekly...?
in which they said 'no no no...!'

I believe the best way to stop paying for garbage is to shut off your water, this gets you off the radar map. New homes don't get added till the water starts, but I've had one home off collection for 4 years due to construction. We are not told when this happens, so your bi-weekly collection will still be picked up so long as there is never a problem that we call in about it.
Now your only problem is finding your own water supply. If you do not hear from me again, it's because they've found out I've leaked information on how to get off the grid!
