As Cootie and I scooted through the deep snow of Iowa City's streets today with our XC skis jutting skyward from a piece of pvc pipe that is hose clamped to my rack we were talking about how glorious it is to be car free. We thought the IBC forum could use a car free section for folks to share their experiences and photos of doing anything at all by bicycle that most folks here in the USA would do with a car or worse, an suv. People (and their bicycles) are capable of so much more than they give themselves credit for and hopefully our shared expriences will enourage others to give serious thought to curtailing their car use and maybe even going car free.
So lets hear about your cargo bike or xtracycle or trailer or stolen milk crate or the $100.00 in groceries you got home in your backpack or your romantic date on a tandem or whatever facet of your life you are happily living without a car.

ps: please resist the urge to post 100 pictures of people in other countries moving beds and telephone poles and such by bicycle. This is about YOU and what YOU are doing car free!

Please tell me more about your ski carrying contraption.
I usually just sling the ski bag over my shoulder and balance on my front basket, but I was actually thinking yesterday of a more secure set up for longer distances.
Please share.
Thanks!

Yo Gritty!
The bicycle ski carrying apparatus was introduced into these midwest parts by one Jason McCartney some years back so he could ride out to McBride, ski for 5 hours or whatever and then ride home. Fast. I made one to ride to Finkbine, ski for 1 hour or less and then ski home but twice I have done the big ride out to McBride and I must say it is awesome.
Its sooo simple! Get a piece of pvc pipe about 2 feet long in the 3 or 4 inch diameter and some big hose clamps along with a few pieces of old bicycle tube. You can cap the bottom of the pipe or not, but if you don't you have to secure the poles to the skis with a bungi cord or something, I like my pipe capped. Use the hose clamps to attach the pipe to your rear rack as far back as it will go and as low, too. I put tube around the pipe to keep it from slipping. Done!
Just drop your skis and poles in (4 inch pipe will carry 2 sets!) and off you go. I just wear my boots so upon arrival I can just lock the bike and jump on the skis and, well, ski!
Have fun and maybe I will see you out there one of these days?

Thanks Pickle!
I'm going to try and put that together this evening and head out to mcbride later in the week.
One question- are the skis pointed to the front of the bike or straight up in the air. Sorry, but I'm having trouble picturing how it looks...
I like my pipe capped
Too much information.
